Fondazione Cottino is launching the second edition of the Cottino Applico Award for Ophthalmology, that promotes the technological transfer of the research into this area. The most innovative idea for the development of devices, services, or therapeutic solutions for the sight will be awarded 100.000 euros aimed at transforming effectively the research into a product.

Doctors, scientists, scholars, researchers, aspiring entrepreneurs are called to apply; the fundamental requirement to participate is that the project has to be innovative, to have a high clinical, social and entrepreneurial potential as well as the ambition to solve a specific need in the field of ophthalmology.

The Award is carried out together with Innogest Capital, a primary Venture Capital fund manageroperating in Italy in the biomedical sector, and SOI – Italian Society of Ophthalmology, the main national scientific body bringing together the specialists of this sector. Thanks to these collaborations and the overall amount granted, the Cottino AppliCO Award is the most relevant one in this sector.

The submitted projects will be evaluated by a Jury of leading members in the scientific and academic field of ophthalmology, experts coming from the research and industrial development sector, investors and entrepreneurs specialized in the biomedical field.

Giovanni Cottino, President of the Foundation, explains: «The first edition of the Award has shown us how doctors and researchers have many ideas they would like to transform into products and services. Moreover, we make it possible: we teach researchers how to pursue and walk along the entrepreneurial routes and we support them financially because our main and exclusive interest is to allow the fulfilment of their project by emphasizing the developer’s role. What makes us different is that we are not only a start-up sponsor but also real partners along the path of the development from research to business.

The Award, promoted by Fondazione Cottino, strengthens the link between research and business by encouraging the consolidation of applied ophthalmological projects with a high potential in terms of technological and / or social impact.

The Award is carried out together with Innogest SGR, a primary Venture Capital fund operating in Italy in the biomedical sector, and in collaboration with SOI – Italian Society of Ophthalmology, one of the most representative and active bodies at a national level in the specialized medical field.

APPLICO is the main award in its sector both for the significance of its prize and for the depth and level of expertise in selecting and assisting worthy projects. It also introduces the winners into an ecosystem of assets and industrial skills as well as into an entrepreneurial network capable of accelerating the transition from research to clinical and industrial application.

The Award also promotes a proactive reflection on the main unsolved problems of medicine. Scientists and researchers of any area (doctors, engineers, computer scientists, pharmacologists, biotechnologists …) are invited to discuss and reflect on the potential applications of their discoveries, ideas, and scientific research, which have a high clinical and/or social impact for business applications.

This opportunity involves Universities, Hospitals, and Research Centres, associations, individuals to support the excellence in Italian innovation applied to the ophthalmology sector, and aims at generating a significant impact on the well-being and health of the society through the creation of new businesses.
